OpenGen was formed to enable the open collaboration across business lines to deliver a universal standard through which genealogy content can be recorded and shared.
The foundation will work together on the establishment of a single standard and widespread adoption thereof across the genealogy industry. There are currently plans for 3 working committees including:
API Committee - development of a real-time sharing standard Content Committee - advancement of a portable format standard Marketing Communication - adoption and administration of the Foundation
The International OpenGen Alliance is a non-profit council of family history executives, genealogy professionals and technologists working to develop and maintain a standard for data exchange and sharing across various platforms and devices.
Launched July 2010, The group is working toward the development of a contemporary file format standard and related standards, white papers, and other supporting deliverables needed to address and promote the opportunities of a modern day genealogy information exchange, as well as the ongoing development and implementation of the APIs that open up the world of data to real-time interaction and validation.
